Work Package 4: survey on existing blood donor management practice across Europe
DOMAINE will analyse the existing blood donor management practise across the EU using a Survey.
A questionnaire is designed in order to describe management practice in European blood establishments. What routines and procedures take place at present? How do blood establishments address topics like donor recruitment, donor invitation, donor retention and deferral?
Recruitment strategies and donation invitation procedures include:
- Methods of donor recruitment (e.g. brochures, campaigns, donor recruits donor)
- Methods of donor invitation (e.g. donor invitation card, blood drives, internet, email, text messages)
- Recruitment and invitation of specific donors (e.g. O-negative blood type), etc.
Donor retention strategies include:
- (non) Remuneration of donors
- Donor complaint procedures, waiting times, opening hours, etc.
Deferral procedures include:
- reasons for deferral, length of deferral time, etc.
Moreover, issues pertaining to blood donor characteristics and the endorsement of the quality, safety, and availability of blood and blood components used for therapeutic purposes will be covered, i.e. how do blood establishments address practices geared to promoting voluntary unpaid donations?
The questionnaire issued in English will be designed by the responsible partners, assisted by the Advisory Board. Face-to-face interviews with key-persons will be held in several participating blood establishments. To ascertain the blood donor perspective, several donor focus groups and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organisations (IFBDO) will be asked to comment on aspects of the blood donation process.
Opinions on blood establishments in relation to the blood recipients will be gathered by face-to-face interviews with the Thalassaemia International Federation. Topics in the questionnaire will demonstrate current blood establishment practice in the European Member States. The work package leader will write a survey report.
