Work Package 2: Dissemination of the Results
DOMAINE aims to ensure effective dissemination at various levels during the entire course of the project, by using DOMAINE’s website, through publications and a training programme.
Website
DOMAINE’s website is used for information sharing. The portal has both a public area and a member (non-public) area. The member area is used for communicating results and information sharing between the Working Groups, participants and project leader. The public area is used to inform non participating Member States and the general public about the project objectives and, as the projects proceeds, on the deliverables.
Publications
• The work package leaders and Working Groups, assisted by the project management team, write reports about the project results, the Manual and the Training Programme. The dissemination of the project results will be taken care of through abstracts and publications in scientific journals as well as presentations of the results at scientific meetings. An educational session at the ISBT meeting in 2010 will be organised as well.
• Publication to the general public. By the distribution of press kits, press releases, newsletters, and publications in blood donor magazines, a general public, especially blood donors and blood recipients, will be informed.
Training programme
For the dissemination of the manual on good donor management, a training programme will be developed. The training programme will include training material to be distributed and used by blood establishments, in compliance with the requirements of Directive 2002/98/EC and its technical annexes. The Training Programme will become available to Blood Establishments from non participating Member States within Europe. The availability of this training will be actively promoted by the partners and by a training office. During the international meeting of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) in 2010 the training programme will be presented in an educational session.
Description of the dissemination work
The dissemination activities to all blood establishment professionals will be in the form of:
• A paper and electronic version on the internet describing the results of the survey;
• A paper and an electronic version of the final Manual;
• The Training Programme which will include training material to be distributed and used by blood establishments, in compliance with the requirements of Directive 2002/98/EC and its technical annexes. The Training Programme will become available to Blood Establishments from non participating Member States within Europe. The availability of this training will be actively promoted by the partners and by an organization such as the European School of Transfusion Medicine;
• Presentations given at international meetings, such as International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) in 2010 (including an educational session) and the American Association of Blood Banks;
• Scientific reports and publications in (inter)national journals such as Transfusion, Transfusion medicine, Vox Sanquinis;
• The web-based concept will be integrated in the European Blood Alliance website if approved by its members for further continuation beyond the co-funding of the EC for this project.
Stakeholders
• Blood establishment professionals: All 27 Member States' (of which 13 do participate) blood establishments face the problem of future shortfall of blood components. Therefore, participating blood establishment professionals are important stakeholders. Non-participating Member States will be informed through the internet, which includes a forum, by an international conference (ISBT) and through publications.
• Current and future blood donors: A substantial percentage (3-4%) of all European citizens is blood donor. For them it is important to receive the best service possible. By improving donor management, the service will be enhanced. The project will, for example, yield information about effective methods to reach donors. As a result, donor satisfaction about the blood establishment and blood donation will increase. Information reaches the donor through the internet platform, blood donor magazines and through the International Federation of Blood Donors Organizations and local blood organizations.
• Current and future blood recipients: It is estimated that each year 5 to 10 out of 1000 persons need a blood transfusion. This includes persons in need for short term and long term transfusions, like Thalassaemia patients. Since Europe has an ageing population and the demand for blood will increase, European citizens will benefit from this project. The internet platform, publications and the Thalassaemia International Federation will be used to reach blood recipients.
